IIT-M, POWERGRID to offer scholarship to financially weak students

The Indian Institute of Technology of Madras (IIT-M) has recently announced that it is collaborating with the Power Grid Company of India to introduce a scholarship program for B. Tech (Bachelor of Technology) students who come from financially weak sections.

Reportedly, the Power Grid firm is planning to devote around Rs 10.5 Crore (USD 1.3 Million) towards building a scholarship fund as its CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiative for supporting the deserving students at the IIT-M by covering their tuition fees via merit-cum-means scholarship.

Notably, this is said to be the highest contribution received by the IIT Madras for scholarships under the CSR in the fiscal year 2021-22.

Recently, an MoU for executing this initiative driven by CSR was inked by V K Singh, Director (Personnel) of POWERGRID Company of India, and Prof Mahesh Panchagnula, Dean (Alumni and Corporate Relations) of IIT-M in the presence of Prof V Kamakoti, Director of IIT-M.

According to Prof Kamakoti, IIT-Madras aims to be an institute for everyone. Initiatives like scholarships and BSc degree program for students who deserve it have made IIT-M more accessible. The institute is thankful to POWERGRID and is planning to expand such scholarships to all the technical institutions across India.

While speaking about the scholarship program, Mr. Singh said that POWERGRID believes that scholarships can be a useful model of paying back to the community.

Owing to the rising cost of education, students require more financial assistance. The Scholarship scheme showcases the commitment of POWERGRID toward education and to the future of the next generations.

He further said that POWERGRID hopes that this scholarship program will make a significant and real impact on the lives of students who benefitted from this.

Moreover, IIT-M said that the ‘Power Grid Endowment scholarship’ fund had been devised to offer scholarships to B.Tech students from financially weaker sections on a merit-cum-means basis.
